      血紅素加氧酶-1 (HO-1)也稱為Hsp32,是血紅素加氧酶的誘導型異構體,對血紅素的NADPH、氧和細胞色素P450還原酶依賴性氧化進行催化,氧化為一氧化碳、亞鐵和膽綠素,膽綠素迅速還原為膽紅素。這些反應產物具有重要的生理作用:一氧化碳是一種有效的血管擴張劑,并被認為是cGMP和血管緊張度的生理調節劑;膽綠素及其產物膽紅素是有效的抗氧化劑;“游離"鐵通過影響鐵調節蛋白(IRP)-1的構象及其與mRNAs的5’-或3’-UTR中的鐵調節元件(IREs)的結合,增加氧化應激并調節許多mRNAs(例如,DCT-1、鐵蛋白和轉移受體)的表達。三種已鑒定的血紅素加氧酶亞型是催化血紅素轉化為膽綠素和一氧化碳的血紅素加氧酶系統的一部分,分別是可誘導的HO-1或Hsp32,在腦和睪丸中大量存在的組成型HO-2,以及與HO-2相關但為不同基因產物的HO-3。
